Virtual Challenge

Take your running to new heights.

When it comes to running we count kms and minutes but, as anyone who has run the Pirates21k will tell you, no matter the distance no two routes are ever equal.

That’s why we are turning it up for our virtual event this year – and counting your climb too!

It’s pretty simple. When submitting your time for inclusion on the leaderboard we’re going to ask you to also check your GPS fitness tracker* for your Elevation Gain/ Total Climb.

We then take your total climb (in metres) and divide it by your time which spits out a number we’re calling your vert-tally points. The more you climb, the more points you score and the higher your ranking on the leaderboard.

Still confused?

Let our sea-legged pirates help explain:

  • Barnacle Bill runs a beachside sub 2hr 21k but only logs 50m of climbing. He scores 605 points.
  • Shiverin’ Shelly takes on Joburg’s Toughest 21 with 373m of uphill slog and with her 2hr time she scores an awesome 4476 points.
  • And even though Pete Peg-leg does a blistering 1:30 along the beach route his miserly bounty is only 800 points.

And there be treasure for the winners!

Our virtual race prize money was previously limited to the Over The Mountain course but we’re opening it up so no matter where you are you can still win (if you’re in Joburg good luck finding a tougher route!)

Prize money:

  • 1st place: R1500
  • 2nd place: R1000
  • 3rd place: R500

For R150 you’ll get a goodie bag including a cap and our awesome Pirates 21km medal. We’ll courier to a pick-up point closest to you anywhere in SA at only R70 extra. You can add up to four entrants’ race packs in the same parcel or pick-up from Pirates Club on 18th or 19th Feb!

What’s the catch?
As with our Over The Mountain challenge last year, participants need to submit a valid public activity link (Garmin, Strava, MapMyRun or similar) to be eligible for prize money.
You’re welcome to take your route off-road but your time needs to be under 3 hours to be eligible for prize money so mountaineering might be out.
You need to complete a bona fide route (out-and-back, one-way or circular with a max of two laps) so no hill repeats!
*We realise that not everyone has access to a GPS watch or phone – you can still submit your time but you may be ranked lower in the points table if no elevation gain is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Timing And Results

Your Race Number will be emailed to you by the Friday following your entry (or first week of February if entered before end-Jan). You are welcome to print and wear your personalised race number but only need to know the number to submit your time.

There are no timing chips. You will need to time yourself using your watch or phone and submit your race number and elapsed time at https://bit.ly/submitmytime

If you have a GPS tracking app/watch/device please also welcome to submit a public GPS activity link to appear on the #OvertheMountain leaderboard and to be eligible for certain prizes.

Starting and Finishing at Pirates Club

Pirates Club is at 25 Braeside Road, Greenside. The club gate will be open from 6am with a volunteer car guard on duty. Please consider tipping the car guard and please do not leave any valuables in your vehicle.

The south door to the clubhouse (directly off the parking area) will be open from 6am to access Ladies changeroom (with showers) and toilets as well as Men’s toilets. The Men’s changeroom and showers are to the west of the Clubhouse above the fields.

  • The ‘official’ starting point is along Cruden Bay Road above Pirates Club (through the park) and will be marked with a flag.
  • The official finish is at fields below the Clubhouse. Please do not run across the fields if there is any sport activity taking place, run around the perimeter.

Absolutely! We have two fantastic restaurants with The Grill serving coffee and breakfast snacks from 7am and The Green Room across the road offering a great breakfast menu. The bar will also be open from 10am so be sure to stay and enjoy our outdoor space!

You will be required to wear a buff or facemask when on the club property. Pirates Club also has a COVID-19 register and does temperature scans at the gate. There is plenty of outdoor space and seating for your peace of mind. Sanitiser is available at the club, please sanitise regularly.

You are not required to wear a facemask when running but its a good idea to keep one on hand in case of close contact.

Running the Route

We encourage you to run any Weekend in February except Saturday 19 or Sunday 20 February.

The route will be discreetly marked throughout February with skull & crossbones and arrows on the road. If you are not familiar with the route please download a map or GPS track file at pirates21.co.za/route
