Our Covid-19 Policy

Our runners’ safety at Pirates 21K Powered by Medshield is our priority. To minimise the risk of spreading Covid-19 and the chance of getting seriously ill should someone contract the virus we require that all participants:
  • 🏴‍☠️Either be fully vaccinated OR
  • 🏴‍☠️Submit a negative PCR or Rapid Antigen test within 72 hours of running.

To make the process of testing more affordable for runners who require them we have negotiated with Total Covid Solutions to offer rapid antigen tests at R100/test at registration on Friday 18 February and Saturday 19 February.

More information and other measures to follow in the registration email at least one week prior to the run. We look forward to hosting you at Joburg’s Toughest 21.

Entry Queries

Yes. Our entries for the live event are capped for safety of runners. 

Live Race entries close at midnight on Friday 11 February 2022 or as soon as our limit on participants is reached.

There will be no on-the day entries

Unfortunately we are only allowing online entries this year.

Although entries are still open we have reached our cap for t-shirts and goodie bags on the live race.

The run up..

All participants are to be fully vaccinated or have completed a test within 72 hours of the run. Vaccine card, digital vaccine passport or test result will need to be presented when collecting race pack together with ID.

Masks need to be worn while at the club. Sanitiser will be available. Masks do not need to be worn while running.

All Race Pack and  Number collection is from Pirates Club, 25 Braeside Road, Greenside:

  • Friday 18th Feb: 12pm-6pm 
  • Saturday 19th Feb: 10am-4pm
  • Sunday 20th Feb: 4:30am-5:30am

We urge you to collect before Race Day. 

A vaccine certificate (digital or card) OR negative Covid test result needs to presented together with ID when collecting race number and race pack. 

You can substitute by giving the new entrant a letter with a copy of your ID stating you are handing the entry over to this person who is collecting. The new entrant will have to bring proof of vaccination or negative Covid test and R50 substitution fee.

Substitutions can only be processed during the Friday or Saturday Registration times and not on Sunday morning

On the Day

Parking may be limited to club premises this year. More information will be available closer to the time. We urge runners to use e-hailing or share lifts as parking is limited.

Portaloos are provided in the parking prior to the start. The clubhouse is NOT OPEN to runners before the start. The Ladies changeroom (with showers) in the Clubhouse will be open from 6:30am. The Men’s changeroom and showers are to the west of the Clubhouse above the fields.

The starting point is along Cruden Bay Road above Pirates Club (through the park)

Absolutely! There will be coffee trucks and we have two fantastic restaurants: The Grill at the Clubhouse and The Green Room across the road offering a great breakfast menu. The bar will also be open from 10am so be sure to stay and enjoy our outdoor space! Please note there is no ATM at the Club.

The cut off time for the runners is at 09h30am

The Live Race is a staggered start with mat to mat timing. Your timing chip will be provided and is included in your entry.



Participants need to comply with all Race Rules and ASA Regulations. Original ID may be required for Age Category prizes.

For first male and female runner to reach the highest point on the route. Must still finish in top 10.


RACE INDEMNITY: By entering this event I undertake to be bound by the rules and regulations of the event. I warrant that I am in good health and aware of the risks and dangers of physical nature of this sporting event, and do not claim ignorance of these risks and dangers. I hereby accept that I participate in the event entirely at my own risk and I release the Pirates Road Running Club, all official sponsors and partners, volunteer groups, and any and all local authorities, from any responsibility, liability or costs relating to any injury, loss or damage of whatever nature, however caused, arising directly or indirectly from my participation in the event including pre- and post-race activities. Food and drinks will be on sale at Pirates Club after your run. No mask/buff, no entry and no run. The route will be marked on 20 February which is the official race day, and will be discreetly marked for other days in February for the virtual event. We expect every runner to follow the correct route outlined. Make sure you have printed the map, or have loaded the route on your GPS watch or phone.There will be marshals on the route on race day but no marshals on other days in February – practice general pedestrian safety when running or when you cross busy intersections. There will be water points on race day only but we encourage runners to carry your own hydration and do not litter. No refunds will be granted under any circumstances.
