JOBURG’s TOUGHEST 21
Pirates Road Running will be hosting the 41st annual Pirates Half Marathon (21km) on Sunday, 17th February 2019 at Pirates Club Greenside.
The Pirates 21km has a long standing history with the first event taking place in 1979. The route which has changed very little over the years is a challenging one around and over Northcliff Hill. The route has three (in)famous hills with the final one topping out at 1 760m above sea level, the highest point in any road running race in Gauteng. It is challenge that should be on any runner’s bucket list, from the novice to the most seasoned athlete.
Total prize money has been maintained at a whopping total of R47 600, with equal prize money for both men and women. First prize is a very attractive R7 000, R3 500 for second place, down to R850 for fifth place. There will also be cash prizes for the first male and female over 40 years, 50 years and 60 years. The first three junior male and females also receive cash prizes. The first male and female runners over the highest point receive R1 000 each as King / Queen of the Mountain.
The race starts and finishes at the Pirates Club Greenside and the post-race facilities are unparalleled. There are a number of food and drinks stalls that are set up for the race, offering participants and spectators a wide range of fare. Pirates have play facilities for children and they are encouraging runners to bring their whole family with to the race and take advantage of the opportunity to spend some quality time with the whole family.
The entry fee is R150 and the event is pre-entry only. The field is limited to 6 000 participants. The race starts at 06h00. The cutoff of the race is 9h30. Temporary licenses will be on sale at the additional cost of R35. Runners have to pre-enter via www.entrytickets.net/pirates21 before the 8th February 2019.
